NO!!! Unless your landlord has gone trughoh the procedures (i.e. the court system) to remove you from your apartment for nonpayment of rent or any other breech of the lease, they CANNOT constructively evict you. Call the Attorney General's office and ask them for a tenant's rights guide and in the meantime get some bolt cutters and cut the lock. Of course, if your landlord DID go trughoh eviction proceedings in court, you're out of luck.I am a law student and represent clients in NY landlord/tenant court. I am also a landlord.

You would need either an eietcrlc strike or a maglock installed along with a power supply and a momentary switch of some type. This type of work is best left up to Locksmiths and others who work on access control as it is usually cheaper to get it done right the first time than to call them in to fix it after the fact. Another plus is you should get a job that looks good and works.
